    The Morgan Home

The two and one-half story home (6,000 square feet) was built before 1890 by one of Heflin, Alabama's founding families, the John F. Morgan family, with additions being made as late as 1930 to accommodate a growing family of twelve children.

The house has an interesting arrangement of rooms and architectural features.  The seven Morgan boys had the top one and one-half stories to themselves.  This included an outside entrance onto porches which at one time completely surrounded the home.  The library-music room was used for music lessons taught by Miss Bessie Morgan, a Morgan daughter and one of Cleburne County's first music teachers. Before being used as a music room, the library had doubled as a boarding room for teachers.  Most of the downstairs' rooms had double fireplaces.

Outside, the yards were the scene of the first lawn tennis court in the county.  Huge oak trees still grace the house and yards as they did through the years of the Morgan family life, which ended in 1977.

The house's current occupant, Colonial Cottage proprietor, Pamela Payne, loves the house as well as its contents.  She is working on the restoration and has filled the sixteen rooms with antiques, gifts, furniture and collectibles.  The shop is divided into specialty sections, such as a children's room, a candle room, a year-round Christmas room, and a bridal room.

Plans for The Colonial Cottage's future include further expansion and updating of the existing inventory and restoration of the once beautiful grounds and landscaping along with the addition of gazebos in the backyard for outdoor club meetings and shows.  The Colonial Cottage, or The Morgan Home, has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
